  • I found about kobolds from e621, when they weren't as popular as they are know. Probably DnD people knew them, but DnD is niche, so they were minority. I was attracted to kobolds because I always loved saurian characters. Lizards. I actually started to like anthropomorphic lizard because of Battle of Wesnoth, where I discovered they are cool. As a writer, storyteller or, as I prefer to call myself, creator of worlds, I made many lizard characters. They are not kobolds, they are lizards. But because kobolds are lizards, I really love them. I have few species of them in my story. Some are from alternative universe, others are endemite variations of certain place.

Btw, I am aware of different versions and where they come from. That the word for kobold comes from German, because they mine and cobalt is one of the mineral blah blah blah. The translation error one is funny, though. It was Japan, right?

Also what is zito? Is this artist name? Or some slang? I tried to google it but to no avail. But that version looks the best to me from the ones in this picture.

  • The Gamer: I played dnd 3rd edition and now I want to bang the lizardbold/I played BG 3 and now I want to bang Popper.

The Netizen: I secretly want to bang goblins, but they're just green humans so I changed my game up/I beat off to way too many of Sorc's kobolds and now that's the only thing that will get me off.

Actually a dragon: I want to be a kobold with none of the downsides.

Der Kobold: Doesn't exist. Go on, find someone with a house gnomesona, I dare you.

The Zito: Irritating and thankfully rare offshoot. Quarantine on sight.

Translation Error: Japanese. Will always be found in any Japanese media regarding kobolds, love em or leave em.

Yep, a translation of some of the old D&D books into Japanese took "Evil, dog-like men...with scaled hides" and turned it into plain old "Evil dog-men", without mention of scales.

That's commonly thought to be the case, but I was looking around recently and it looks like that might be a misconception. Well, the common thought is that cobalt was named after kobolds, but originally 'kobold' referred to house-spirits, not mining spirits. The two were conflated together at one point, and cobalt may have an entirely unrelated etymology.

Yeah. Kobolds in Japanese lore are going to be some degree of canine. Sometimes straight up dogs, sometimes more monstrous.

Yes, Chris Zito. A New Yorker Streamer and Voice actor and recently got into Indy game design. He is well known on the Podcast the Unexpectables and he was a former member of Team Four Star. In the Unexpecables he Played a Kobold Ranger name Task that he drew and became the base for all Kobolds in the World of that DnD game. It's a unique take on Kobolds that a lot of people grew to like.
