Artists note:
For this general story, I was envisioning a nightmare of a global warming scenario, something encapsulating personal anxieties (and doom loops) over the whole thing I used to have. If you've ever had an icy sensation running up your spine while doom scrolling through news articles on environmental issues, this setting is trying to get at some of the more serious scenarios that drive such dread.
The general cause of this setting is an apocalyptic famine causing millions to starve to death in the United States. There is no recovery from this as millions of frightened, dangerously delusional, misinformed -and armed- citizens suffer a collective nervous breakdown in the overwhelming anxiety and 'death panic' gripping their psyche. There is no real history of mass starvation in US history, and most Americans, I suspect, will simply refuse to accept that such a thing is even happening should it ever happen. Just look at the present political situation and you get an idea of what I am getting at.
In the aftermath the world is a broken place, with civilization in a death spiral in many regions, and in others, tyrannical AI powered mind control technology is slowly enslaving humanity, as laboratory creations (such as Beol) run amock, escaped or let loose by technophilic plutocrats dreaming of becoming immortal gods with super advanced medical technology. The climate apocalypse is merely a prelude to a new world that they intend to completely remake from the ground up. TeraGek, the supernational entity dedicated to "mitigating" climate change (and Beol's employer) are part of this effort to control the planets future according to the whims of the super rich and powerful (collectively forming a cabal known as "Solipsis").
The worldbuilding and thought experiments for the story have helped me personally develop a sense of internal peace; I recognize what always was facing me from the beginning. Some things are outside of our *personal* control, and are not worth shortening our lives over in ceaseless anxiety and impotent slacktivism...
...because the feedback loops were already underway before you and I were even born.........
