That's actually a popular tumblr myth. I'm not going to get into all of the origins, but I'll provide an example. "Female" came from the Latin "femella" or "femina" while "male" came from the Old French "masle" which became "mâle" in modern French and the word "masle" came from the Latin word "masculus". The Latin words can still be noticed today in how you can describe something as feminine or masculine.
